The United States welcomes around one million international students to its various colleges and universities each year. For many prospective international students, tuition costs and other financial considerations may inform where they choose to study. Although the U.S. boasts some of the most expensive academic programs in the world and it can be a challenge to secure financial aid, there are still affordable study options for international students out there.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly study abroad option, a general tip is to avoid major cities and popular, “big name” universities, and opt for smaller towns or institutions. While the East and West Coasts in the U.S. tend to be more expensive, the Midwest and parts of the South have many cost-effective study options for international students to choose from. Applying to programs located in areas with a lower cost of living on average can also make your entire study abroad experience more affordable. In this way, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in smaller, welcoming communities with on-campus support and lifestyles geared toward students.
