Senators Draft Deal to Protect ‘Dreamers’ and Boost Border Security
A bipartisan duo of senators has drafted an immigration deal that would legalize DACA recipients and allocate billions of dollars to boost border security.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Democratic Senator Krysten Sinema of Arizona landed on the agreement after lawmakers repeatedly failed to pass immigration reform.
Details of the deal are not yet finalized and any legislation would need at least 60 votes to pass in the Senate.
New Version of Green Card Application to Go Into Effect This Month
The Biden administration announced that a new version of the green card form to adjust status will go into effect later this month.
Form I-485, which is used by green card applicants applying from within the US, will include a new public charge portion and several additional questions. The new form will be required for all green card applications starting on December 23, 2022.
DHS published a new public charge rule in September, which determines whether green card applicants are inadmissible to the U.S. based on their likelihood to become a public charge.
U.S. Naturalizations Rise to Highest Level in Decade
The number of people becoming U.S. citizens is increasing, according to a new report.
More than 900,000 immigrants naturalized during the 2022 fiscal year, the highest number in a decade, according to a Pew Research Center study.
That total is the third-highest on record and the highest since fiscal year 2008.
The study used data from DHS and the Census Bureau from the first three quarters of the year.
Deadline for REAL ID Extended to 2025
DHS announced Monday it would extend the deadline for REAL ID-compliance licenses by 24 months.
The requirement was set to take effect in May, 2023, but the federal agency said it would extend the deadline to May 7, 2025.
DHS said state motor vehicle agencies needed extra time to work through the backlog of applications brought on by Covid-19.
