The refugee experience is one of profound hardship and resilience. Fleeing violence, persecution, or disaster often means leaving behind homes, communities, and dreams in search of safety. Yet, for many refugees, this journey becomes a source of strength, shaping their identity and inspiring them to rebuild their lives.

Afro-Appalachian folk musician and former refugee Janjay Lowe, better known as Mon Rovîa, has transformed his own story of displacement into music that resonates with audiences around the world.

Mon Rovîa was born into the chaos of the Second Liberian Civil War. At just 7 years old, he was adopted by Christian missionaries and relocated to the U.S., moving from Florida to Montana, then to the Bahamas, before eventually settling in Tennessee. These transitions and the exclusivity of Christian music in his household left him disconnected from mainstream music, but they also shaped his unique artistic voice. Drawing on his African heritage and the folk traditions of Appalachia, Mon Rovîa has created a sound that bridges worlds — one he and his team have dubbed “Afro-Appalachian.”

His music not only explores themes of self-discovery and healing but also shines a light on the often-overlooked African roots of Appalachian folk traditions. Instruments like the banjo, folk rhythms, and even gospel and blues trace back to West Africa, where Mon Rovîa was born. Though he hadn’t planned to delve into this history, his music naturally draws from these influences, and he now embraces the opportunity to educate and inspire others about these cultural connections.

Mon Rovîa’s journey as a musician began during a personal crisis in 2020 when he turned to songwriting to cope with his mental health struggles and survivor’s guilt. Feeling that he wasn’t giving back to his community, Mon Rovîa considered abandoning music altogether. However, his friend and manager, Eric Cromartie, heard Mon Rovîa’s work and encouraged him to continue. Together, they built his career, with Mon Rovîa choosing a stage name that honors his birthplace and launching himself into the folk music scene.

Since then, Mon Rovîa has released two EPs and a debut album, quickly gaining recognition for his raw, narrative-driven songs. His latest single, Winter Wash 24, reflects his personal story as a refugee and the ongoing struggles faced by displaced individuals. Part of his upcoming EP Act 4: Atonement (releasing January 10, 2025), the track also supports the International Rescue Committee (IRC), with all proceeds going to the refugee assistance organization. Mon Rovîa credits the IRC’s long history of aiding displaced people as a major source of inspiration, saying, “Their incredible work shows us how to better care for and love our neighbors in these challenging times.”

Mon Rovîa’s rise to fame has been fueled by TikTok, where his introspective lyrics and haunting melodies have captivated audiences. His videos, often simple and evocative, gained him nearly 300,000 followers in one year and caught the attention of celebrities like Bella Hadid. His unique blend of Afro-Appalachian folk has not only revived interest in the cultural history of the region but also resonated with people struggling with their own self-doubt and healing.

As Mon Rovîa continues to tour and prepares for the release of Act 4: Atonement, his work reminds us of the resilience and creativity refugees bring to their new communities. Through his music, he honors his heritage, sheds light on forgotten histories, and inspires audiences to embrace a culture of compassion and solidarity. Mon Rovîa’s story is a powerful testament to the strength found in adversity and the transformative power of art.
