The U.S. Department of State recently announced new dates for its “Special Passport Acceptance Fairs,” which allow first-time applicants and children to apply for passports in person during evenings and weekends.
What Are Passport Acceptance Fairs?
These fairs are special events organized by the State Department to make it easier to apply for a passport in person. They are designed for:
- First-Time Applicants: Individuals applying for their first U.S. passport.
- Children: Applicants under the age of 16, who are required to apply in person using Form DS-11.
Adults eligible for passport renewal using Form DS-82 can submit their applications online or by mail at any time.
Benefits of Attending a Passport Fair
- Extended Hours: Fairs are often held during evenings and weekends, accommodating those with busy weekday schedules.
- Typically No Appointment Necessary: Many events accept walk-ins, saving you the hassle of scheduling in advance.
- Personalized Assistance: An assistant onsite can help guide you through the application process.
How Do Passport Fairs Work?
- Locate an Event: Visit the State Department’s website to find upcoming passport fairs. Events are listed by date and state, with new events added regularly.
- Prepare Necessary Documents: Ensure you have all required documents, including proof of citizenship, identification, and a passport photo. Boundless has put together a detailed guide on what you need to apply for a passport.
- Attend the Fair: Arrive at the event during the specified hours.
- Submit Your Application: At the fair, you’ll submit your application and pay the applicable fees.
Processing Times
When applying for a passport, you can opt for either routine or expedited processing. Routine processing typically takes 6-8 weeks, while expedited processing (available for an additional $60) takes 2-3 weeks. If you need a passport for urgent travel within two weeks, it’s best that you make an appointment at one of the 26 passport agencies or centers.
Upcoming Events
For February and March, several passport fairs are scheduled across the country in locations such as Durham, NC; Woodland Park, NJ; and Yuma, AZ. A complete and updated list of events can be found on the Department of State’s website.
Can’t Find a Fair Near You?
If you can’t find a passport fair near you, some passport acceptance locations are open on the weekend. You can search for these facilities using this State Department tool.
