The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has designated Lebanon for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months amid the armed conflict and humanitarian crisis in the country. The move allows eligible Lebanese nationals already in the U.S. to apply for protection from deportation, work authorization, and travel permits during this period.

In addition, DHS is easing employment restrictions for Lebanese F-1 students in the U.S. facing severe economic hardship due to the ongoing crisis. Students can work more hours, reduce their course load, and apply for off-campus work authorization through 2026.

How TPS Will Help

The TPS designation enables Lebanese nationals and stateless individuals who last resided in Lebanon to remain in the U.S. without fear of deportation. During the 18-month registration window, eligible individuals can apply for:

Applicants must meet DHS requirements, including proof of continuous U.S. residence as of November 27, 2024.

Relief for Students Struggling Amid Crisis

For Lebanese students in the U.S. on F-1 visas, the economic ripple effects of Lebanon’s ongoing crisis have been devastating. DHS is now allowing these students to work more hours, take fewer classes, and apply for off-campus jobs to ease the financial strain.

To qualify, students must:

  • Be Lebanese nationals or stateless individuals who last resided in Lebanon.
  • Be in valid F-1 status as of November 27, 2024.
  • Be enrolled in an institution certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
  • Prove they are facing severe economic hardship directly linked to the crisis.

Students approved for off-campus work must apply for a work permit, while those working on campus only need authorization from their school’s Designated School Officer (DSO).

What’s Next

Eligible individuals are encouraged to take the following steps:

  • TPS Applicants: File for TPS benefits, including work authorization and advance parole, before May 27, 2026. Boundless has a detailed guide on how to apply for TPS.
