Form DS-2019, Explained

Everything you need to know about the form required for a J-1 exchange visitor visa

What is Form DS-2019?

Form DS-2019 (“Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status”) is a key document for individuals applying to come to the U.S. as part of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program. This form allows you to apply for a J-1 visa and participate in a wide range of exchange programs — including internships, academic studies, research, teaching, and cultural exchange.

Form DS-2019 is issued by a U.S. Department of State–designated sponsor organization. It identifies you as an approved participant in an exchange visitor program and provides key information such as:

  • The category of your exchange program (e.g. intern, scholar, teacher, au pair)
  • The start and end dates of your program
  • The sponsor’s name and contact information
  • Estimated financial support during your stay

You’ll need this form to apply for a J-1 visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Who Needs Form DS-2019?

You need Form DS-2019 if you are applying for a J-1 visa to participate in a U.S.-based exchange program. Common categories include:

  • College and university students
  • Professors and research scholars
  • Interns and trainees
  • Teachers and au pairs
  • Camp counselors and summer work travel participants

J-2 dependents (spouse and children under 21) also need a separate DS-2019 form issued under your program.

How to Get Form DS-2019

You can’t download or complete this form on your own. It must be issued by a sponsor organization that has been approved by the U.S. Department of State.

Steps to get the form:

  1. Apply to a designated sponsor program that fits your exchange category.
  2. Once accepted, your sponsor will create a DS-2019 form and send it to you.
  3. Review it carefully for accuracy before signing.

You’ll need this form to schedule your J-1 visa interview and bring it with you to your appointment.

FAQs

Can I change my program after receiving my DS-2019?
