It can be difficult enough to apply for a visa on your own, let alone for your children. Before immigrating to the U.S. as a family, it is important to understand the K-2 visa requirements and what to expect for you and your children during the application process. Here are some key takeaways you should be aware of:

Know the requirements

To be eligible for a K-2 visa, the applicant must be a legally recognized child of the K-1 visa holder, under the age of 21, and unmarried. As part of the application process, applicants must include a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate to prove the parental relationship. To check whether or not you and your child meet the government’s eligibility requirements, answer simple online questions here and let Boundless take care of the rest.

Make your travel arrangements

Once your K-1 and K-2 visas are approved, you will likely start planning your travel arrangements to the U.S.. It is important to note that K-1 visa holders must travel to the U.S. within 6 months of receiving their visa. Children are able to enter the U.S. after their parent (for up to 1 year after K-2 approval), but they are not permitted to travel to the U.S. before their parent. More information on K-1 and K-2 processing times can be found here.

Prepare for next steps

Applying for a K-2 visa is just the first step in your child’s immigration journey. Being approved for a K-2 visa does not give your child immigrant status in the U.S. right away. After a K-1 visa holder marries their U.S. citizen partner, their children must apply for a green card through the “Adjustment of Status” process. The green card application has a new set of government forms and different supporting documents which must be included. If this all sounds very complicated, don’t worry! Boundless is here to walk you and your children through both the K-1 and green card stages. We even safely store your account information for seamless help on next steps, so you don’t have to start from scratch.
