Devastating Maui Wildfires Impact Local Immigrant Communities

The catastrophic wildfires sweeping through Maui, Hawaii, are among the deadliest in U.S. history. The blaze has destroyed entire towns, killing dozens of people and displacing thousands more. Among the many historical landmarks that have been impacted is the Wo Hing Temple Museum, a social and religious gathering place for Maui’s Chinese immigrant community.

Staggering U Visa Backlog Puts Crime Victims in Immigration Limbo

According to recent data from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U visas, which allow victims of crimes who assist law enforcement to remain in the U.S., are experiencing increasingly long processing times. There are more than 300,000 U visa applications currently pending, which means applicants stuck in the backlog are left without legal status or the ability to work legally in the U.S. while they wait.

September Visa Bulletin Sees a Big Change

The September Visa Bulletin has been released. For the first time in years, the F2A category is no longer current, meaning the spouses and minor children of green card holders will be waiting longer for their green card applications to be approved.

Extension and Redesignation of Sudan and Ukraine for TPS

USCIS announced it would extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukraine and Sudan for another 18 months, starting on October 20, 2023 and ending on April 19, 2025. USCIS is also redesignating TPS for these countries, meaning Sudanese and Ukrainian nationals who have resided continuously in the U.S. from August 16, 2023, may apply for TPS for the first time.
