USCIS Announces Third Gender Option on Naturalization Form

Apr 3, 2024

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that a new third gender option “X” (defined as “Another Gender Identity”) will now be available on Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization). Form N-400 is the first USCIS form to include a gender option other than “Male (M)” and “Female (F).”

New Form N-400 Edition

For all citizenship applicants filing Form N-400, the new 04/01/24 form edition will include the X gender option. Applicants filing this edition of Form N-400 on or after April 1, 2024 will have X available as a gender option on their Certificate of Naturalization once it is issued.

Supporting Documents Not Required

Supporting documentation is not required to select the third gender option X on the Form N-400. In addition, USCIS has stated that the gender you select does not need to match the gender listed on other identification or immigration documents, such as your birth certificate, passport, or state-issued driver’s license.

For Applicants With Pending N-400s

If you have a pending Form N-400 and you’d like to update your gender selection to “X,” you can do so by providing a letter to USCIS explaining this request, either as part of a Request for Evidence (RFE) or during your citizenship interview.

For applicants with online USCIS accounts, you can upload the letter as new evidence for your pending N-400. If you don’t have an online account with USCIS, you can email USCIS to request the change at [email protected].

Important:

N-400 is currently the only USCIS form with a third gender option. USCIS is working to expand the option to other forms and official USCIS documentation.
