U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is updating Form I-131, which is used to apply for travel documents, parole documents, and arrival/departure records. This is important for those applying for Advance Parole (to re-enter the U.S. after traveling abroad while a green card application is pending), Re-entry Permits (for lawful permanent residents who need to travel outside the U.S. for extended periods), and Refugee Travel Documents (for refugees and asylees).

Here’s a breakdown of the changes and what they mean for you:

What’s changing about Form I-131?

  • New Name: “Application for Travel Documents, Parole Documents, and Arrival/Departure Records”
  • New Edition: Edition date 06/17/24 (replacing 04/01/24)
  • No Grace Period: The new edition must be used starting October 11, 2024. USCIS will reject any applications using the old form after this date.

Why is this happening?

USCIS regularly updates forms to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and reflect current immigration policies. This update likely includes changes to:

  • Clarify instructions and eligibility requirements: Making the form easier to understand and complete accurately.
  • Update security features: Enhancing the form’s security to prevent fraud and misuse.
  • Align with current regulations: Ensuring the form reflects the latest immigration laws and procedures.

Key Dates:

  • Before October 11, 2024: You can still use the 04/01/24 edition of Form I-131.
  • On and after October 11, 2024: You must use the new 06/17/24 edition. Applications with the old form postmarked on or after this date will be rejected.
